Following the flood disaster, the city of Stolberg decided to rebuild its town hall. The high-rise building was demolished, making it possible to construct a new building in the historic old town. Eike Becker_Architekten were selected to participate in the competition and designed an open building that promotes a sense of well-being and pride in the successful reconstruction. It blends harmoniously into its surroundings as a good neighbor. The new building frames the old town hall, placing it in the center of Kaiserplatz. With its strong, differentiated individuality, it creates a sense of identity without being ostentatious. A building with a pocket park, playground, and terraces for working, indoors and outdoors, for talking, helping, playing, and living well, also for grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as for insects, birds, and bats.
The New Town Hall consists of two- to five-story structures that blend elegantly into their historic surroundings as an ensemble. We have given them names according to their functions: faction building, community center, playground, greenhouse, sports field, inn, pergola, loggia, and city balcony. The pathways around, into, and up the buildings are inviting and easy to navigate. The shop windows on the ground floor offer insights and arouse curiosity. The communication staircase with the city window to Kaiserplatz connects all areas and levels, visually linking the new and old town halls.
