The design of Eike Becker_Architekten for the 70 metres high boarding and office tower A-TOWN HIGH in Innovation Park Augsburg was convincing. The offices invited for the competition included Studio Libeskind from New York, Henning Larsen from Copenhagen as well as Allmann Sattler Wappner and Kupferschmidt Architekten from Munich.
The tower is modified by subtracting elements from its corners to create a structure made of four slim slices that are stacked with varying offsets between them. Like in a stack of boxes the four sections of the tall, slender building are shifted against each other. The individual parts are interrelated, they interlock and emerge one from another. Eike Becker_Architects developed a vertical, slender facade structure with fine sections that connects the different parts of the building and also allows you to perceive their differentiation. The basic structure of the facade is created by vertically offset frames that are two floors high. The frames connect all parts of the tower with each other. The material, the ongoing lines which are interrupted time and again, and the slight offsets allow the facade to clothe the building like a robe. From a distance the contract between light and dark, transparent and printed glass as well as metal panels create subtle impressions that give this building an appearance of diversity right to the last detail. The building represents wholeness and diversity at the same time. All sides are similar but different. Thus the house lives up to its visibility in this prominent location.
Innovation Park Augsburg
Innovation Park Augsburg has an area of 70 hectares, which makes it one of the biggest of its kind in Europe. It is a modern campus site with a special combination of living, working and residential space. This is where companies and scientific institutions develop innovative solutions in the fields of industry 4.0, lightweight structures and fibre compound materials, mechatronics and automation, IT and embedded systems, environmental protection technology as well as aviation and space technology. There is a need for temporary accommodation close to the workplace for a growing number of workers, and that is why it is planned to establish a boarding house in A-TOWN HIGH in addition to offices and commercial areas. The 18-storey boarding and office tower is complemented by a lying, flat building part with a car parking facility inside.
