On the site of the former Schauspielhaus (theatre), in the centre of Hindenburgstrasse and thus in the very heart of the pedestrian zone, a building ensemble is to be created that will highlight this prominent location for the whole city. The design for the Mönchengladbach Arcades features an exceptionally large building. We accept the task of structuring, differentiating and integrating it into the existing cityscape by exploiting the special opportunities offered by this location.
Joined frames of different sizes appear to be stacked on top of one another – sometimes very precisely, sometimes with gaps. They lend plasticity and proportion to the building structure by means of projections and recesses. In particular, as compared to the old town and its block-like structure, the façade takes on a multifaceted and varied shape. From the street, projecting and recessing volumes create an eye-catching play of light and shadow and provide information. Large and small volumes lend the building a sense of variety with a view to Hindenburgstrasse.
Historically, Mönchengladbach has been regarded as a town of weavers and cloth makers. The mechanical cotton spinning and weaving mills, fabrics, patterns and ornaments have found their place in the city's history book. Transferred to the architectural scale, aluminium sheets are perforated, cut and folded individually and connected to the building via an aluminium substructure
